- Reconsider your decision to abolish Guarantor System – CDD-Ghana to EC

The Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) is calling on the Electoral Commission (EC) to reconsider its decision to scrap the guarantor system.

The Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at CDD-Ghana, Dr. Kojo Asante argued that “ given the current economic circumstances, the NIA has not been able to implement its own plans and it might be difficult to achieve that so I think from our position at CDD-Ghana, once the conditions are not ripe, you have to adjust and consider the guarantor system because same system also exist under the NIA process, I think the last time I checked the statistic is between 40 to 50% of people register under the NIA through the guarantee system”.

Dr. Kojo Asante was Speaking on the Gold Morning Conversation on Radio Gold with Sena Nombo.

He believes the Ghana Card which the election management body has resolved to use for voters registration also allows for the use of the guarantor system during its registration process.

Dr. Asante said “I think the EC must keep the vouching system, if you want to control the abuse, you can limit number of people who can vouch, you keep the vouching system because you even do it for the NIA, and if you are prepared to rely on the NIA then there shouldn’t be any problem relaying on you own the EC vouching system”.

The proposed CI has sparked controversy especially the portion that seeks to make the Ghana Card the sole document for voter registration in the country.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu wins Nigeria's Presidential general Elections against Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu was on Wednesday declared the winner of Nigeria’s controversial presidential elections. He will become Nigeria’s fifth elected president since 1999, winning the race for the country’s top job on his first attempt. The former governor of Lagos state, represents the same party as outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari, who Tinubu said he helped propel to the top seat in 2015.

Tinubu defeated vice president Atiku Abubakar of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and popular third force candidate Peter Obi, who has gained in popularity among young people in particular.

Tinubu, 70, represents the ruling All Progressives Congress party, which received close to 8.8 million votes — about 36.6% of the total, according to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman Mahmood Yakubu

The opposition leaders decried the polls as rigged and called for a fresh vote. Vote counting since Saturday’s polls has been vehemently challenged by many who allege the process has been marred by technical failures and corruption. On Tuesday, the country’s main opposition parties described the results of the election as “heavily doctored and manipulated” in a joint news conference.

They said they had lost confidence in Yakubu, the electoral body chairman, and that the results “do not reflect the wishes of Nigerians expressed at the polls on February 25, 2023.”

However, The INEC has rejected the calls for a fresh vote , with one spokesperson insisting the election process had been “free, fair and credible.”

The election was one of the most fiercely contested since the country returned to democratic rule in 1999, with more than 93 million people registered to vote, according to the INEC.

But Yakubu said on Wednesday that 24 million valid votes were counted, representing a turnout of just 26%.
